Background of Moraine Lake

Moraine Lake, also known as Lac Moraine, is located about 14 kilometers southeast of Lake Louise. It is one of the many stunning blue lakes in Banff. The reason behind its mesmerizing blue color is the presence of rock flour, which are tiny particles of rock suspended in the glacier waters. When sunlight hits these particles, it creates a remarkable refracting effect, giving the lake its brilliant blue hue.

However, the time to witness this breathtaking color is limited, as Moraine Lake remains frozen for most of the year. The thawing period only occurs from June to October. The lake’s high elevation of 1,885 meters (6,183 feet) contributes to the longer period of freezing, as colder temperatures prevail at higher altitudes.

This unique combination of factors, from the glacier-fed turquoise waters to the seasonal thawing, adds to the allure and exclusivity of Moraine Lake. It is a natural wonder that captivates visitors and offers a glimpse into the extraordinary beauty of the Canadian Rockies.

The best time to visit Moraine Lake

The best time to visit Moraine Lake is from June to October when the road is open for visitors. Outside of these months, the road closes due to snow and avalanches. In winter, experienced adventurers can enjoy cross-country skiing, fat biking, or snowshoeing with avalanche knowledge. The lake remains frozen until late May because of its high elevation. From mid-June to August is the ideal time to visit for warmer weather and vivid turquoise water. Even in early October before the road closes, the lake may have receded with snow and ice. However, the colors of the lake remain visible. Catching the Ten Peaks covered in fresh snow is a spectacular sight.
