Guests taking in a Canadian Rockies viewpoint — Banff Journey

Calgary, Alberta, Canada

We're Banff Journey —
born in the Rockies

A small, independent Calgary-based tour operator run by people who live in these mountains year-round — and love sharing them.

Our story

Why we started Banff Journey

The Canadian Rockies are one of the most beautiful places on earth. They're also genuinely difficult to visit well as a first-timer — navigating mountain roads in winter, securing the timed-entry tickets Parks Canada now requires for Moraine Lake, knowing which viewpoints most people miss, and figuring out which lakes still have road access in which months. There's a real gap between what makes it onto Instagram and what makes a great day in Banff.

We started Banff Journey because we saw too many travellers spending their one trip to the Rockies stuck in traffic, missing the best spots, or arriving at Moraine Lake at the same time as four tour buses. We figured there was a better way.

Every guide on our team lives in Calgary or Banff. We drive the Icefields Parkway in every season. We know which side of Lake Louise gets the best afternoon light and which weeks bears are most active along the Bow Valley Parkway. When you book with us, you're booking the same trip we'd plan for a friend visiting from out of town.

Over the last few years we've welcomed 20,000+ guests from every continent. We've added tours, refined our routes, and learned which stops people want longer at — and which to skip entirely on busy weekends.

Responsible tourism

We treat the parks the way we'd want them treated

All four parks we operate in are protected ecosystems, and we treat them that way. Our guides follow Parks Canada wildlife-distancing rules — 30 metres from deer, elk, sheep and goats; 100 metres from bears, wolves and cougars — and we never bait or feed animals for photos. Ever.

We pay full per-guest park entry fees on every tour (it's why "national park entry fees" appears under What's Included on every product). We pack out everything we bring in, and we choose locally owned coffee stops, restaurants and vendors wherever the route allows. If a viewpoint is overrun by the time we arrive, we have alternatives — sometimes the best photograph in Banff is the one nobody's standing in line for.
