If you only have one day in Banff, this is the one to get right. Lake Louise, Moraine Lake, Johnston Canyon — three of the most iconic destinations in the Canadian Rockies, back to back, with a guide who’s driven these roads in every season and knows them like a second home.
We pick up in downtown Calgary at 7:15 AM and head west into the mountains. By mid-morning you’re at the shore of Lake Louise, looking across at the Victoria Glacier — a view that’s been on a million postcards and still stops you cold in person. From there we head up to Moraine Lake. The road is restricted to tour vehicles during peak season, so we handle access: no shuttle lottery, no parking chaos. Climb the Rockpile and you’re looking down on the Valley of the Ten Peaks, bigger than any photo suggests. Most people reach the top and go quiet for a moment.
Mid-afternoon we drop into Johnston Canyon — not a lake stop but a limestone canyon carved by Johnston Creek over thousands of years, with a steel catwalk bolted into the walls that takes you right to the Lower Falls. A short rock tunnel opens onto a viewpoint where the mist and roar hit you from a few metres away. At 1.2 km each way with about 30 m of elevation gain, it’s one of the most accessible dramatic hikes in the Rockies. In winter it freezes solid and becomes an ice walk that consistently ranks among the best cold-weather experiences in Canada.
We wrap with time in Banff townsite — walk Banff Avenue, grab a coffee, or head down to Bow Falls. Calgary guests are back downtown around 6 PM.

Frequently asked questions
Will I see Moraine Lake in winter?
No — Moraine Lake Road is open only June 1 to mid-October, and the lake is closed and frozen through winter. On off-season departures we swap in Surprise Corner and Bow Falls, while Lake Louise (which freezes into a skating rink) and Johnston Canyon's ice walk become the winter highlights. You'll still get a full day in the park.
How much walking is involved?
This is an easy-to-moderate day on your feet. The Moraine Lake Rockpile is a short 10–15 minute climb over loose rock, and Johnston Canyon to the Lower Falls is 1.2 km each way with about 30 m of elevation gain on a mostly flat catwalk. Between stops you're in the vehicle, so you set the pace at each one.
Can I join from Banff or Canmore without the Calgary pickup?
Yes. The day is timed around the 7:15 AM Calgary departure, but we also pick up in Canmore (8:40 AM) and Banff (9:00 AM), so you can join from any of the three. Guests already in the mountains simply meet us at the Canmore or Banff point. The price is the same from any location.
Is it suitable for older travellers?
Yes — this tour suits seniors, families and most travellers with average mobility. Stops are reached by short, mostly flat walks (under 10–15 minutes), except the Johnston Canyon Lower Falls hike, which has uneven terrain and a gentle uphill grade. We offer senior-friendly private tours with relaxed pacing and shorter walks on request. Children of all ages are welcome — mention car-seat or booster needs when booking.
