Most Banff-area tours put you back in the vehicle every 45 minutes. This one doesn’t. The Canmore Day Hike is built around two of the most rewarding trails in the Canadian Rockies — Grotto Canyon and Grassi Lakes — roughly 8 km of real terrain across a full day, with a guide who’s walked both in every season.

Grotto Canyon comes first. You walk inside a limestone slot canyon, walls rising up to 60 metres in the narrowest sections, carved by water over thousands of years, with the creek running down the middle. In summer it’s an easy walk with a few ankle-deep crossings (sneakers are fine). In winter the creek freezes solid and the canyon becomes a natural ice corridor — visually unlike anything else you can reach without technical gear, and one of the most underrated winter experiences in the Rockies. Ice cleats are provided. Halfway through, our guides stop at the Indigenous pictographs: red ochre figures painted on the canyon walls by First Nations people between 500 and 1,300 years ago, still visible if you know where to look. Our team explains what’s known about them, and what isn’t.

After lunch in Canmore, the route heads up to Grassi Lakes — two small turquoise lakes set in a limestone bowl above town, with the full width of the Bow Valley laid out below. The hike is 1.7 km each way with 170 m of elevation gain: moderate for fit walkers, a proper effort if you don’t hike regularly. The payoff at the top is one of the most overlooked viewpoints in the area — photographers consistently rate it above more famous spots. In winter, the surrounding ice formations make it genuinely otherworldly.

Frequently asked questions

How demanding is it?

This is the most physically active tour we run — roughly 8 km of walking across the day. Grotto Canyon is an easy walk with a few ankle-deep creek crossings in summer, while Grassi Lakes is 1.7 km each way with 170 m of elevation gain: moderate for fit walkers, a proper effort if you don't hike regularly. Come prepared to be on your feet.

What about kids?

Because it's our most active tour, it suits older children and teens who are comfortable with about 8 km of walking, including the 170 m climb to Grassi Lakes. Younger children who tire easily may find it long. If you're travelling with kids and aren't sure, message us on WhatsApp and we'll help you decide — or point you to a gentler option like Banff in a Day.

Is it a winter tour too?

Yes — and winter is one of the best times to do it. Grotto Canyon's creek freezes solid into a natural ice corridor, and the ice formations around Grassi Lakes turn the area genuinely otherworldly. Ice cleats are provided for grip. Dress warmly and in layers.

What should I wear?

Wear sturdy footwear and dress in layers you can adjust as you warm up on the climbs. In summer, sneakers are fine for Grotto Canyon's ankle-deep creek crossings; in winter, warm boots, gloves and a hat are essential, and we provide ice cleats. Bring sunscreen, sunglasses and a packable rain jacket — mountain weather changes fast.

Can we see the pictographs in winter?

Yes — the Indigenous pictographs are on the canyon walls and stay visible year-round, including winter when Grotto Canyon becomes an ice corridor. Our guides stop at them and explain what's known about the red-ochre figures, painted by First Nations people between 500 and 1,300 years ago, and what isn't. They're easy to miss on your own, so having a guide point them out is part of the experience.
